Physical & Behavioral Health
Physical Health Care
Access to physical health care is integral to help individuals with the physical
health issues that often occur alongside mental health issues. Individuals in the
midst of a mental health crisis may neglect their physical health which can lead
to long-term health concerns. Affordable and accessible medical treatment, including
dental care, can help ensure better long-term outcomes. In addition, early
identification of mental health disorders or trauma by medical professionals,
including pediatricians, can help individuals effectively manage their mental health.

Criminal Defense Best Practices
Some public defense offices have specific divisions for mental health experts. These divisions include social
workers who work alongside attorneys and caseworkers to more effectively handle cases of clients with mental
health issues. In any event, defense counsel advocacy will be more effective when lawyers are fluent in
behavioral health best practices and when they are proficient in accessing behavioral health resources in
their community.

|
Community-Based Treatment
Community-based treatment involves the broad spectrum of services and treatment an individual with behavioral
health needs may require. The goal is to connect individuals with the least restrictive setting in which to
receive appropriate treatment services. Treatment offerings may require use of several different providers,
but co-location can facilitate retention of treatment participation. In areas with few to no treatment providers,
remote services and treatment may become an option.
